ANC THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET – TKAG AND AFRIFORUM PICK IT UP
The ANC, reported as ‘being tired of talking’ will forge ahead with contentious projects that it claims will kick-start the stuttering economy - even if it is taken to court – this is the challenge from the ANC to those opposed to shale gas development (fracking) in SA. AfriForum and TKAG reacted immediately accusing the government itself of mismanaging the shale gas development debate in South Africa by failing to consult with the public and permitting Minister Shabangu to proceed under a veil of secrecy. TKAG and AfriForum have promised to meet the ANC in court if licences for exploration are granted under current circumstances.
Meanwhile, in the United States, activists are taking matters into their own hands. Citizens opposed to fracking are apparently responding to calls from organisation Earth First! to become involved in the sabotage of corporate supply lines for the fracking industry. Earth First! reports a number of activities on their site, including a large anti-fracking blockade at a drilling site in Pennsylvania, sabotage at another fracking site in P.A. (which was reported to have caused $120 000 in damages) and the theft and sabotage of equipment at the building site of a compressor station for fracked gas in Orange County, N.Y.
